Suzhou, it’s time to celebrate. Our newest wine, the 2015 Villa Marcello Prosecco, is an elegant sparkling wine produced by one of Italy’s oldest, most illustrious and most famous wine-making families, the Mazzeis. It’s classy, but fun. Complex, but very easy to drink (trust us).
This is the good stuff.
It’s actually the first vintage Prosecco produced by Giovanni Mazzei, son of one of Italy’s oldest and most respected families. Made from grapes grown on his mother Alessandra Marcello’s 57 hectare estate, the vines were planted in 2010 and allowed to grow with basically zero interference and the utmost attention paid to environmental responsibility.
As for the rest of the Mazzei family, well, you can’t really talk about the history of wine-making in their region without talking about them. Ser Lapo Mazzei (1350-1412) was a notary of the Florence government and is even considered the first person to refer to a wine as a Chianti.
Even crazier is the legacy of his descendent Filipo Mazzei (1730-1816), who was invited by Thomas Jefferson to plant a vineyard on his estate and while in the U.S. is said to have played a part in inspiring his famous friend’s well known view that ‘All men are created equal’.
Nowadays, the Mazzei family might not be helping out with the Declaration of Independence, but they are still just as big a part of the Italian wine world. After almost six centuries, the family is still going strong producing some of Italy’s finest wines.
Even with such an illustrious history, you can’t say that the Mazzei family aren’t doing their ancestors proud.
